Tang Yin, courtesy name Bo Hu, is renowned as one of the Four Great Talents
of the Jiangnan Region. This painting depicts the harem of Wang Yan, the last
ruler of Former Shu during the Five Dynasties period. The scene portrays four
singing and dancing palace ladies preparing their attire, awaiting the emperor’s
summons to attend to him. Adorned with golden lotus crowns and dressed in Daoist
robes embellished with cloud and rosy clouds patterns, their faces are rouged,
and their physiques, though plump, exude an elegant delicacy. Their demeanor is
both dignified and enchanting.
